When C. R Johnson settled in South Pasadena in 1895, he built this charming home for his family in the Midwestern Victorian design of his native Indiana. This large home and grounds, served the small town as the the Johnson Egg and Poultry Business. Around 1909 Peter Mason refurbished the house with picture moldings, from his local manufacturing company, as seen today in the home. In 1989, interior designer, Janet Marangi acquired the home and started the loving restoration. Her goal was to create an Inn that would recall the heritage of the original 1895 home, old South Pasadena and a serene way of life. The Artists' Inn opened in 1993, with personalized service, gourmet full breakfasts and delightful afternoon teas, in a quiet and charming historic location. It is like "going to Grandma's house".

The Cottage
Behind this beautiful, rose-covered trellis and white picket fence is our cottage with two guests rooms and three suites with fireplaces, canopy beds, and Jacuzzis. The cottage is located just across the courtyard from the main house. Each of the uniquely decorated rooms is inspired by an individual artist—Degas, Georgia O'Keeffe, Gauguin, Grandma Moses—or by an artistic period, as with our Expressionist Suite.
Guests in the Cottage are invited to enjoy the common areas of the main house as well as their rooms in the cottage. All guests are welcome to come to the dining room for early morning coffee, available at 7:00am, and read the daily newspaper in the parlor, then enjoy a gourmet breakfast, served from 8:00 to 9:30 in the dining room and on the front porch. In the afternoon, relax with a cup of tea and a special, homemade teatime treat.
